Why is this medication prescribed?
Avasimibe is an ACAT (acyl-coenzyme A: cholesterol acyltransferase) inhibitor that was developed to treat heart disease, prevent the progression of atherosclerosis, as well as lower cholesterol.
This medication has not been approved by the FDA. However, several clinical studies found that avasimibe (CI-1011) is effective in the prevention and regression of aortic fatty streak area in hamsters, and that it also managed to lower lipoprotein(a) and plasma cholesterol concentrations in chow-fed cynomolgus monkeys. Final trials on humans are yet to be confirmed.
